My kids, they aren't like everybody else. Sometimes that drives me crazy (like when Hip Hop Boy won't eat anything that's prepared for dinner...ever...in life. SO picky!) Sometimes it makes me giggle. (When Shaman Boy spends 10 minutes nonstop babbling in his shamanic chant and I have zero idea what he's trying to accomplish. You have to smile or you go insane. No really.)
The way my boys sleep and wake up in the morning is as unique as they are. Hip Hop Boy is generally wrapped in a thick blanket, head buried (like his dad...why do they make that blanket burrito? Aren't they HOT??) and when you wake him up you are generally met with a fart and some kind of nonsensical, half awake, leftover dream speak such as "But Mom you already made the popcorn" (from this morning) or "I just put those clothes right here and now there's a dog".
Shaman boy...that's another story. #1-He comes up swinging most mornings. You have to really nudge and push and almost shout to even get him to acknowledge you, and you have to get in close. The trick is to get close, holler "Shaman Boy! Shake a tail feather!" and then run for cover because when he turns over he's bringing a fist with him. He doesn't mean to, the sweet angel, he just hates mornings (much like his mama). #2-Shaman boy is the exact opposite of Hip Hop Boy in that he generally is spread eagle on the bed with no clothing or covers at all (which makes his swing that much more powerful). When he does get chilly in the night and decides to cover up it's always creative.
Take this morning for example:
Yes, that's Shaman Boy stuffed into a pillow case. Along with the pillow. He looked like a pillow mermaid, er merman. I can only assume that he tried to get the other pillow on as well (maybe for the top half?) because the pillow case has been discarded to his right hand side. And what is that pillow case next to? Oh that's just a big comfy blanket that he actually could be wrapped in. But no. Shaman Boy marches to the beat of his own shamanic drum. Who needs a blanket when you have a perfectly good pillow to stuff your legs into.
For the record, he did not come up swinging this particular morning. The pillow must have softened his normal morning temper (lucky me). I wonder if there is a market for this type of sleeping arrangement? Maybe I can combine it with a snuggie and really corner the market on ridiculous lounge wear.
Any way you slice it, my kids are One Of A Kind. I wouldn't have that any other way. At least I get a good laugh in before I get clocked in the chin at 6 AM by my ornery 7 year old.
Happy Tuesday!

Menu Plan Monday..um, Wednesday
Another Monday, another menu plan. I've been participating in Orgjunkie.com's Menu Plan Monday and what a difference it makes in the way our week goes! Not only do
we eat better because we are eating home cooked meals but it saves us so
much money. Looking for inspiration? Check out her Menu Plan Monday post and find tons of menus and new recipes to try out.
Without further ado, here is our week:
Father's Day is fast approaching..are you ready? I usually have the boys make something for Dad for his big day but this year Dad had a board game in mind that he really really wanted so we surprised him. He can't wait to play and the boys can't wait to play with him!! They already took out the pieces and board and smelled/inspected everything. Yes, I said smelled. Hubby has a thing for the way a new board game smells...."the scent of his youth" or something of that sort. I'm glad it makes him so happy. I'm not sure what my youth would smell like: jelly sandals or neon t-shirts or George Michael...or Wookies, perhaps? I know there are some other 80's kids out there shaking their heads right now. Youth is the smell of a fresh Tiger Beat magazine with your favorite 80's heartthrob's poster in the middle. Ahhh...
What would your youth smell like? (I can't WAIT to see the comments on this one!)
Without further ado, here is our week:
- Sunday-Simple baked pasta with salad and garlic bread
- Monday-Grilled burgers and hot dogs with mac and cheese, green beans and fruit
- Tuesday-Pulled Pork sandwiches with cole slaw and chips
- Wednesday-Crustless spinach and feta quiche with biscuits and fruit
- Thursday-Chicken fajitas on the grill with refried beans and cilantro lime rice, fresh pico de gallo, fixin's
- Friday-Dinner out to celebrate Hip Hop Boy and Shaman Boy completing their first ever basketball camp. It's been a Loooong week! More on that later.
- Saturday-sandwiches, leftovers, clean out the fridge day!

Firehouse Subs: Food with a Heart~GIVEAWAY
Contest is closed! Congrats to Christina L who said "I'm trying really hard to choose between the Firehouse Meatball and the Club on a Sub but I don't think I can! They both look so delicious!" I know, right? Everything looks so delicious! Stay tuned for more great giveaways coming soon and thank you for reading IN A GALAXY!
A few weeks ago I was invited to a special bloggerevent at Firehouse Subs. It was an evening of
delicious food and lots of info with a wonderful host-one of the co-founders of Firehouse Subs, Robin Sorensen.
I'm going to be straight with you-I honestly hadn't heard of Firehouse Subs before the week of the
event and then suddenly there were advertisements on the radio every hour. I was really intrigued as to where this restaurant came from all of a sudden. Wow, am I Captain Oblivious or what? They have more than 600 locations nationwide. Apparently I need to pay closer attention to life.
The Sorensen Brothers were both firemen with a love of cooking and good food. Their focus, from the start, was on providing the tastiest items possible using quality ingredients. They use twice the amount of meat as your average sandwich joint, and only the finest cuts of meat will do. All of their cheeses are from Sargento, all of the meats handpicked for quality. They don't joke around when it comes to creating the perfect sub. We were served several of their signature subs that night, and all were fabulous, but there are 3 that really stick out in my mind:
The Hook & Ladder:
![]() |
| Smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham, Monterey jack cheese |
![]() |
| Genoa salami, pepperoni, ham, melted provolone, Italian dressing, and seasonings |
![]() |
| Corned beef brisket, pastrami, melted provolone, mustard, mayo, and Italian dressing |
O. M. G. Now I'm starving. Everything we tried was beyond delicious...as evidenced by my complete refusal to let even the tiniest bite go to waste. I even got behind and had subs lined up in front of me at one point because I couldn't let go.
![]() | ||
| At this point the gentleman waiting to take away my basket got bored and wandered off to help someone far daintier than I... Step AWAY from the sub, bro! |
Just to prove that they are dedicated to top quality meats Robin even brought out some of the packages of meat from the cooler to prove to us that they only serve the best.
Yes I am holding a giant hunk o'pastrami. It was delicious. Not the giant hunk of meat, the sub it was part of. Although I would think the giant hunk o'meat was delicious too, if you are into that sort of thing.
I almost forgot the Coca Cola Freestyle machine! Have you seen one of these things yet? They are AH-MAZ-ING!
The problem with this machine is that if you are an indecisive person you will need several
I didn't even mention Captain Sorensen's Datil Pepper Hot Sauce yet..I was saving the best for last. This stuff is like liquid gold. Ambrosia in a little bottle. I like spicy stuff, but Hubby is the real expert when it comes to hot sauces (he and Shaman Boy have a Spicy Lovers Club...true story, they can't get enough). This sauce, however, had me at hello. It was just a tad sweet, but still spicy, and I am kicking myself that I didn't purchase a bottle on the way out that night..I have been craving it ever since.
Possibly the most amazing part of our visit was learning that Firehouse Subs not only believes in finest ingredients for their subs, and believes in incredible customer service, but they also give back to the community through The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation. Here's a little about the foundation from Firehouse Subs:
Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation was launched in 2005 as a means for Firehouse
Subs restaurants to give back to the local community. Emergency service entities throughout the nation are lacking the tools needed to adequately protect their communities. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Foundation effectively reaches out to provide vital funding, resources and support that they may not otherwise receive.
The Foundation is dedicated to improving the life-saving capabilities of emergency service entities in communities served by Firehouse Subs by providing funding, resources and support to public safety entities. Individual restaurants raise money through the sale of pickle buckets, cash donations at the counter and the “Round Up” program, which allows guests the opportunity to “round up” their bill to the nearest dollar. All funds are in turn given back to the Foundation.
Incredible, right? I forgot to mention that .25 cents from every Hook & Ladder sub that is sold goes to the foundation as well. Since it's inception the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has donated more than $5.7 million to public safety entities in 36 states and Puerto Rico...around $80,000 of that has gone to local organizations around Cincinnati alone. That's a lot of pickle buckets (and a whole lotta pickles!) for a fantastic cause!
I really want you to go and check out Firehouse Subs for yourself (and bring me an Italian, will ya?) so I'm sharing $20 in gift cards with one lucky reader!
WIN WIN WIN

I'm not sure I can pick, so good luck with this one (and if you pick more than one I don't blame you!) I'm torn between the Hook & Ladder and The Italian...but there are so many I haven't even tried yet. I should probably do some research first. Tasty, tasty research.

~~Sunday Sayings~~
On this Memorial Day I want to take a moment to thank all of the service men and women, first responders, police, firefighters and so many more who have given their lives in the service to their fellow man and to their country. A special thanks goes out to my brother who proudly served in the Army, and a special remembrance goes to my Grandad who also proudly served the Army during WWII. I love you both.
"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men that died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived."
~Gen. George S. Patton
Happy Memorial Day!
