Valentine's day cookies

Over the weekend we made cut out cookies to decorate for Valentine's day. I have NEVER been able to do cut outs before..and I've tried. Alot. They never held their shape properly for me. I always got them too thin or too thick and they ended up as big blobs or burnt crisps....but for some reason this time was a success and I was thrilled!

I got quite a bit of good advice from friends and found a great recipe. It's tasty, but not too sweet (so you can pile on the icing and decorations!) and holds it's shape amazingly! If you've ever had trouble making cut out cookies this Paula Deen recipe is definitely the cookie to try.

I did find that I need not refrigerate the cookies for an hour after rolled out, they held up fine after 15-20 minutes in the fridge, rolled out between parchment paper.

If you decide to try them out let me know how it goes. I'm thinking flowers and Easter eggs are next on the list! Now to master royal icing to decorate with.....Hmm...

Nishime Family Karate

Most of you know my boys are WAY into karate and love their classes, and if you don't know first hand then you are bound to have noticed from the many photos featuring Karate Kid type poses I've shared over the past year. We've been attending Nishime Family Karate since May of 2010 and the boys LOVE IT!

Today over at the Family Friendly Cincinnati blog I shared a post about our experiences with the dojo and how much they've influenced our kids in a positive way. I hope you'll check it out!!
